I am REALLY impressed by this amplifier. We put this amp to the test for a 3 hour dance, pushing it really hard, and at the end of the dance, the fans were still pushing out cool air and the case wasn’t the least bit warm. The power was plenty adequate and for the price, it’s an amazing deal. Granted the plugs in the back are banana jacks but finding the proper wires is not a challenge. The only time you hear the fans is when no music is playing. This amp comes with the ears to mount it in a rack unit but it also comes with four rubber legs on the underside so it can sit on a table top as well. Set up is incredibly simple and fast. I would highly recommend this amp, but it if was my choice to buy another amp, I would buy the Marathon DJ-6000 for a few more dollars. It would really be worth it.

Once you have learnt some chord progressions and riffs and you are beginning to sound like a guitar player it will be time to start getting yourself your own individual sound. These days guitar players can add effects to their playing in many ways. It used to be necessary to connect to an amplifier but now their are guitar plug ins and software to give you all kinds of effects. You can apply distortion, sustain, wah-wah, chorus, flanger, reverb, delay effects and listen to the results in your headphones without disturbing your family or neighbors. All you need is a sound card.

The effects software that many guitarists think is the top of the range is Native Instruments Guitar Rig 3. It is expensive but good. It provides guitar and bass effects by modeling many popular amplifiers, cabinets, microphones, and effect pedals. It has twelve guitar and bass amps, and a matched cabinet module gives you real classic sounds. The Guitar Rig software has faithfully modelled stomp boxes, distortion and volume pedals, eighteen guitar and six bass cabinets, four rotary speakers and nine microphones – all based on popular vintage gear. A great feature of this effects software is the drag and drop interface for mixing your sound. Just choose an amplifier from classic Fender, Marshall, and Mesa Boogie amps, select the size of your cabinet and play around with the forty-four effects.

The Line 6 Pocket Pod Guitar Multi Effects Processor has over three hundred onboard/portable tones and over 3000 presets. Battery-powered and about the size of a tuner, Pocket POD is a portable guitar effects solution. You can use it for effects in front of your amp, or just plug in headphones and practice.

Guitar FX 3 is a cool software that has not been updated for years but it is good and it is free. Just do not expect it to work if you are using Vista and you should make sure you have plenty of RAM. To get started you just plug your guitar into the microphone or line in. It offers a big range of presets plus you can the tabbed menus to create custom tones which can be saved as presets. You can apply distortion, wah-wah, noise gate, compressor, flanger, reverb, chorus, delay and some of other filters.

Another free effects program is Audacity. Audacity is a free, user-friendly audio editor and recorder for Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux and other operating systems. With Audacity you can record live audio, convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs, edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files, cut, copy, splice or mix sounds together. You can record from a microphone, line input, or other sources and create multi-track recordings. You can change the pitch of your music without altering the tempo, or vice-versa plus Audacity lets you remove static, hiss, hum, or other background noises. The guitarist can alter frequencies with Equalization, FFT Filter, and Bass Boost effects. Other built-in effects include echo, phaser, wah-wah and reverse.

Just so you are not left looking for the guitar effects software using redundant URLs I have left it to you to search using the product names. Some of the software that you need to pay for is available on a trial basis or you might find it for less money on ebay.

Odd as it sounds, I actually picked this up for use with Rock Band 2 (etc.) as it has 8(!) headphone outputs over four independent channels, everyone can hook in their own favorite headphones to play and not disturb others in the room (much) or improve their playing (turn up the instrument track and the rest down a bit, really helps with drum beats).

A few potential caveats/less than ideal features:
- Sound quality is a bit less than audiophile, but not much – more than good enough for everything but serious music listening.
- ALL inputs/outputs are 1/4″ stereo (yeah, the big kind) so most people will need adapters to plug in headphones, and you’ll need dual 1/4″ to RCA cables (see “DJ cables”) to connect to a TV.
- It may just be my TV, but I had to crank the input gain nearly to the max to get a good audio level. (Still more than enough volume and quality does not seem to suffer.)

Overall it works as advertised, despite being small and lightweight (in audio, generally the heavier the better). I’m very pleased with it.

Choosing the Perfect Headphones – A Quick Guide For Novices

Looking for a new pair of headphones and overwhelmed by the flood of models of regular and Bluetooth and wireless headphones? I will give an overview of today’s models to help you pick the pair of headphones that is right for you.

Headphones are available in many different styles. In terms of design, the smallest type headphones are in-ear headphones which are plugged into the ear, some of these have a bracket that wraps around the ear. These in-ear headphones are often bundled with iPods and other MP3 players and can easily be placed in a pocket. The next size up are lightweight headphones that sit on the ear and are connected by an elastic frame. This headpiece either sits on top of the head or wraps around the neck. These two types of headphones are typically the least expensive and you should consider them if you are on a budget. Some in-ear models are specially designed to absorb exterior noise.

If you are able to spend more, you could look at medium-end headphones which are larger than these very small type headphones. Each earpiece has an ear cushion that depending on the model either sits on top of your ears or wraps around your ears. Many people prefer the second type since there is no pressure on the ears. If you feel you would like to go with this type of headphones, you will then need to decide whether to go with an open, semi-open or closed design. An open design means that the audio can penetrate from the transducer to the outside and also cross-couple into the other earpiece. Some people think that an open design will sound light and more natural. A closed design on the other hand will not allow the audio to escape and also block exterior noise.

Most of today’s headphones are so-called dynamic headphones. Dynamic refers to the type of transducer that is used. Another type are static headphones. Static headphones are fairly expensive and require special headphone amplifiers.

Another option to consider when choosing headphones are wireless headphones. Wireless headphones cut the headphone cord and afford total freedom of movement. One type of wireless headphones are Bluetooth headphones. These headphones can be used with cell phones and other Bluetooth-enabled devices. These headphones are typically fairly small but do not offer the same sort of audio quality as medium to high-end headphones.

Other wireless headphones include FM type models which normally work at 900 MHz and digital wireless headphones which work at 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz. FM type models are the least expensive option of wireless headphones. The main drawback of FM headphones is a noticeable hissing, audio distortion and fairly high susceptibility to interference which I caused by the transmission.

Digital models will encode the audio into data prior to transmission which makes these models the best choice in terms of sound quality and robustness against interference. Models which use the less crowded 5.8 GHz frequency band offer the lowest amount of problems with radio-frequency interference from competing devices.

Roundabout Turbo is the next step forward in passive looper design. Similar to the standard Roundabout, the Turbo version is a True-Bypass mechanical switching device designed for both effect and amp switching. In addition to it’s functions as a True-Bypass box, as an effect loop switcher, or as an amp/guitar switcher (without the annoying “pop”!), Roundabout Turbo provides the ability to re-route signal path on the fly, effectively reversing the series order of the loops. There is no active circuitry in this device, the battery only powers the LEDs. The concept is simple – Roundabout Turbo re-routes your instrument signal through one of two signal loops. The two loops are connected in series, meaning that the signal is passed from the input jack to one of the send jacks, and that loop’s return jack is connected to the other send jack. Unlike other passive series signal loopers, you can reverse the order of the loop series. You can also use Roundabout Turbo as a True-Bypass box by putting one or more FET-switched effects in the loops, and turn the effect(s) off via the two loop switches. In addition to switching the loops on & off, Roundabout Turbo can be used as an amp and/or instrument switcher. Simply connect each Send jack to different amplifier inputs, and you can safely and quietly switch between two different amplifiers. And just because we like you, Roundabout will not “POP” when switching between two different amplifiers. You can even connect each Send jack to different inputs on the same amplifier!

PDA batteries like all batteries have electrical specifications that include its volt and milliAmp hour rating. These terms are abbreviated as we see in the following example: 3.7 V, 1600 mAh.

What do these terms mean, and why should you care about the specifications of pda batteries?

Volts or V are an electrical measure of energy potential. You can think of it as the pressure being exerted by all the electrons of a PDA Battery’s negative terminal as they try to move to the positive terminal.

Amps or A is an abbreviation of Ampere, a 19th century French scientist who was a pioneer in electricity research. Amps measure the volume of electrons passing through a wire in a one second. One Amp equals 6.25 x 1018 electrons per second.

Amp hours or Ah measures capacity. That is ultimately what we want to know about PDA Batteries from a consumers point of view. Amp hours quantify how long a pda battery can deliver a certain amount of charge before it runs out. As with all metric measurements, Amps can be divided into smaller (or larger) units by adding a prefix.

In the case of PDA Batteries, a milliAmp hour (mAh) is most commonly used. Note that 1000 mAh is the same a 1 Ah. (Just as 1000mm equals 1 meter.) Note that Amp hours do not dictate the flow of electrons at any given moment. PDA batteries with a 1 Amp hour rating could deliver ½ Amp of current for 2 hours, or they could provide 2 Amps of current for ½ hour.

Typically, PDA Batteries will use 1 to 3 Amps per hour, depending on the model’s processor speed, screen size, screen brightness adjustment, usage, and other factors.

Keep in mind that slight variations in voltage generally do not impact the performance of your PDA. We see this all the time with universal and external batteries. The original battery might be specified at 10.8 Volts, but customers using a universal part can operate their laptop safely at either the 10 or 11 Volt setting.
